The strong international identity of the event is the result of a selection that aims to add value to the differences between countries that are separated by the distance, giving back to the audience a heterogeneous outlook with the objective to give space to not so easily accessible works.

The countries represented are 42, of which 18 come from Europe, 9 from Asia, 2 from Africa, 5 from North America, 6 from South America and 1 from Oceania.

The choice of the short film format reflects the desire of La Guarimba to give visibility to works that would be excluded by the traditional market, but that stand out thanks to their quality.

The official selection has been divided into these competition categories: Fiction, Documentary, Animation, Music Video, Experimental Films and La Grotta dei Piccoli (a selection of shorts for children in collaboration with UNICEF).

We selected high-quality works in the categories of Fiction, Documentary and Animation, with the aim of representing a large variety of genres, according to the style, the topic and the imaginary, moving from thriller to the social drama, from dance to comedy. Together, the selection builds a mosaic of visions, restlessness, critiques and obsessions of new voices or affirmed artists that will guide the audience along the festival.

We decided to include music videos in the official selection, a narrative form that doesn’t always obtain the right recognition. We tried to give dignity to an art form that in this year’s selection unites the power of

image and sound all across the world. From animation to fiction, going through indie and electronic, rap and pop, stories interwave in stylistic and musical experimentations.

The Insomnia category is an exhibition of experimental cinema, born with the objective of discovering new imaginaries connected to the world of cinema and visual arts, a container open to unprecedented languages, new narrative techniques and the infinite possibilities of the film medium.

The last category is La Grotta dei Piccoli, an 80 short animated film program created with the collaboration of UNICEF Italia, with the objective of showing cultural works that wouldn’t be known in other ways to the new generations. Within this category, we created an environmental selection inspired by our sustainability project Cambur, where we aim to touch upon tough subject matters such as the conflict between humans and nature through the simplicity of animation.

In addition to the main competition, there will be three special programs: a selection of short films realized thanks to MigrArti project, introduced by the curator Paolo Masini; a selection of Sub-Saharan Africa shorts, curated by Karmala Cultura; the “Americania” program of shorts from USA, selected by Sam Morrill.

Official Programmers: Sara FratiniGiulio Vita, Alex Spagnolo, Pablo Cristóbal, Alicia V. Palacios Thomas, Marta MiquelJacinta Agten.
