The second decade of La Guarimba Film Festival begins with a courageous and disruptive programme. From the 1246 short films received, we curated a selection of 159 visual works from 45 countries representing all continents, with 53% of them made by women. With 20 Fictions, 20 Animations, 10 Documentaries, 10 Videoclips, and 5 experimental shorts in the INSOMNIA category, the official selection speaks Italian, Quechua, Farsi, French, Swahili, Swedish, Kurdish, English, Cantonese, Spanish, Arabic, German, Greek, Irish, Georgian, and Finnish.

But ours aren’t just linguistic choices: these stories will take you around the world, through struggles, contradictions, love, violence, loneliness, happiness, madness and death, in order to celebrate life. Cinema guarimbero is not limited to entertainment but neither does it become mere propaganda. Our projections under the stars aim to recover the social and millennial act of listening together to today’s stories to plan a better tomorrow.

Among this year’s special programs, we will host FEMINIST PORN curated by the Venetian artist Benedetta Panisson, to start a conversation on the artistic value of pornography; with STORIES FROM IRAN we want to give space to directors who give voice to their people in an inhumane regime; the collaboration with UNICEF ITALIA allows us to continue the activities with children and young people, offering them LA GROTTA DEI PICCOLI, a program of 100 short films combined with laboratory activities to address issues of environmental sustainability, identity and inclusion; we will give space to the film REBUILDING UKRAINE produced by UNHCR to show the consequences of Russia’s criminal war against Ukraine.

Amantea, a Calabrian village without a cinema, from 7th to 12th of August, will once again be the setting for our mission: to bring cinema back to the people and people to the cinema.
